THE HOLY WEEK I. Organization A. Every day is divided into 2 parts: 1. Eve 2. Day B. Each part in divided into 5 praying hours: 1st, 3rd, 6th, 9th, 11th 1. Exceptions: a. Day of Palm Sunday has only 9th and 11th, because 1, 3, 6 are prayed in the Liturgy. b. Good Friday has 12th hr. (burial of Christ) c. Joyous Saturday doesn't have 11th II. Readings of Each Hour A. Prophecies: 2-5 (are fulfilled by the New Testament readings to follow) 1. Exceptions: a. 1st hr of Good Friday: 11 b. 3rd and 6th of Friday: 6 c. 12th hour of Friday: 1 B. Sermons: 1. Only in the 1st, 9th, and 11th hours of the day 2. Explain about crucifixion, redemption, etc. 3. They are by: a. St. Shenouda (7) b. St. John Christom (2) c. St. Athanasius (1) d. St. Severios (1) C. The Holy Week Praise: 1. (Thok te te-gom - Thine is the Power) 2. Said 12 times and thus replaces the 12 psalms of the Agpia hours D. Psalm: said in a sad (Ed-re-bee) tone E. Gosple: 1. 1 each hr until 11th hr of the day of Holy Thursday 2. 1 for the Lakkan (Liturgy of the washing of the feet) 3. 1 for the Liturgy of the Eucharist (Holy Thurs.) 4. 4 for each hour of the Eve and day of Friday 5. Joyous Saturday: 1 for 1st, 3rd, 6th, then entire book of Revelations, then the Liturgy. F. Exposition (commentary) on the gospel III. Events of the Holy Week A. Palm Sunday 1. Jesus leaves Galilee to minister in Jerusalem 2. Enters Jerusalem as a King (Mt. 21:1-12) 3. Casts out the defilers of the Temple (Mt. 21:12-17) B. Monday 1. Jesus hungered, finds a fig tree with no fruits and curses it (Mt.21:18-22) C. Tuesday 1. Jesus goes to the Temple to teach by parables. (Mt. 21:23-22:14) 2. He answers questions such as: a. Paying Taxes (Mt. 22:15-22) b. Resurrection of the dead (Mt. 22:23-33) 3. Incident of the poor woman who gave her 2 coins (Mk 12:41-44) 4.
