Feb. 8'th, in the Andalus Hall in "dar al mudarra'at" in Heliopolis. The Sheikh of Azhar gave a speech on National Unity, and HH Pope Shenouda on the virtue of fasting. It was a friendly gathering, stratifying the relations between the Muslims and the Christians. Among the attendants were:Dr. Kamal el Ganzoury the prime minister, Dr. Atef Sidky the ex-prime minister, and Dr. Mustafa Kamal Hilmy, head of the "shura" council. HH hosted a similar Iftar in the Celebrations Hall in the Papal Residence in the Anba Reweis Cathedral in Abbasia, on Mon. Feb. 12'th. Both Iftars were attended by heads of state, Muslim and Christian clergy, Judges, Public figures, heads of political parties, universities, and newspapers. ***************************************************************************** Other celelbrations: The Iftar of the churches of Heliopolis, Nasr city, Ein Shams, Madinet el Salam, El Herafyeen, and El Hagganah. This took place on Sat. Feb. 3'rd in "Dar el Quoat el Gawweiah" and was attended by: HG Bishop Moussa Bishop of Youth on behalf of HH Pope Shenouda III Dr. Muhammed Sayed Tantawi .. The Egyptian Mufti Dr. Mustafa Kamal Helmy Head of the Shura Council Dr. Mahmoud Zakzook Minister of Awqaf Dr. Ismael Sallam Minister of Health and Population Gen. Adel Bassiouny Chief of Cairo Police and a number of present and ex- ministers, Muslim and Christian clergy of these areas. It was a Joyful, patriotic celebration where speeches of Fraternity and Affection were given. The National Unity cake was cut in the midst of the National Anthem, sung by Samir el Eskandarani. Another Iftar in Shoubra, was hosted by Fr. Salib Matta Sawiros of "Mari- Girgis Elguyoushi" church, and the member in the congregational council. A similar Iftar was conducted in Old-Cairo on Tues. Feb 13'th, under the supervision of HG Bishop Youhanna, and was attended by members of the heritage and monuments office, and some public figures. ***************************************************************************** Meetings with HH the Pope -HH received on Sat. Jan. 27'th HG Metropolitan Bishoy of Damietta, and secretary to the "Magma'a Mukaddas". -HH received on Mon. Jan 29'th HG bishop Kyrillos, supervisor of the coptic monestary in Milano, Italy. -HH received on Wed. Jan 31'st HG Metropolitan Agathon of Ismaillia, and head of St. Paul's Monestary, Red Sea. *************************************************************************** St. Paul's festivities. The coptic church celebrated the death of St. Paul, the First among the Wanderers, on the 2'nd of Amshir (Feb. 10'th), in his monestary in the Eastern lands, in a great celebration headed by HG Metropolitan Agathon. This was also celebrated in Cairo in his church in Ard el Golf. HG bishop Youannes conducted the evening prayers and Mass, instead of HH the Pope. It was also celebrated in Canada, where HG bishop Reweis christned a new church, the bear the name of this saint, in Ontario. **************************************************************************** With the Bichopry of Social Services: HH the Pope met with some of the bichopry's program leaders, following his customary meeting with them on Tuesdays, and the issue of the bichopry's branch in Alex. was discussed, together with the Plantation project, and the Better Life project to face Addiction. *************************************************************************** With the Ambassador of the U.S.A. HH the Pope met, on Wed Feb. 7'th, with Mr. Edward Walker, the US ambassador in Cairo. **************************************************************************** With members of the congregational council. During the last two weeks, HH the pope has given audience to: -Dr. Tharwat Basily, the council's deputy, on Mon Jan. 29'th. -Mr. Wasfy Nashed, of the Legal commitee on Wed. Jan 31'st. -Fr. Salib Matta Sawiros, of the Financial commitee on Mon Feb. 25'th -Mr. Malek Mina, ex-member of the council, on Tues. Feb. 6'th. *************************************************************************** A Scientific Lecture on the old monks-residence constructions HH the Pope attended on Mon Feb. 5'th, a scientific lecture given by HG bishop Samuel on the old monks-residence constructions, at the Coptic monuments and heritage society, in St. Peter's church, Abbasia. HG bishop Samuel displayed some projector slides of the old monestaries, and answered the questions at the end of the lecture. HH the Pope thanked HG bishop Samuel on the great effort that was put into the preparation of this lecture. This lecture was alos attended by Mr. Raouf Ghaly, Head of the society, who briefed HH the Pope regarding the contents of the society's library. This lecture was also attended by the Head of the Coptic Museum, and a number of the professors of the Coptic Studies Institute. ***************************************************************************** The departure of some of the bishops. -On Thurs. Feb. 8th, HG bishop Reweis left for Canada, and HG bishop Misaiil left for Bermingham. -On Mon Feb. 12'th, HG bishop Kyrillos left for Milano. ***************************************************************************** News of the Clergy Last week some of the clergy of the churches abroad come home for a visit to the mother-church: -Fr. Youhanna el Baramossy of our church in Vienna, who met with HH the Pope on Mon. Jan 29'th. -Fr. Roufaiil Zaki of our church in Philadelphia, who met HH the Pope on Thurs. Feb 1'st. -Fr. Youhanna Tadros of St. Mark's church in Gersey City, and was met by HH the Pope on Sun Feb. 4th in Alex. -Fr. Arsanious Aziz of St. George's church in Montreal, Canada. -Fr. Boula el Anba Bishoy of our church in Wales. -Fr. Sirafim el Anba Bishoy of our church in Ireland. -Fr. Roufaiil Farid of our church in Zambia. -Fr. Bishy Boushra of the St. Mark's church in London came on Wed. Feb 7'th, for a few days visit. ***************************************************************************** A Metropolitan for the Syrian church in New Gersey. On Sun. Jan 28'th, HH the Patriarch Zakka Ayouas I celebrated the promotion of Fr. Ifram Karim to a metropolitan on New Gersey, USA, under the name of Mar Kyrillos. HH Pope Shenouda III sent in his place HG Metropolitan Abraham of Jerusalem, to attend the festivities. HG Metropolitan Mar Kyrillos was a student of our Clerical College in Cairo. ****************************************************************************** The "Iskim" celebration. This took place on Wed Jan 31'st in the festival of St. Antoniuos (22 Touba). A large number of bishops and monks attended. After the reading of the bible of the evening prayers, HH the Pope gave the sermon, and read some chapters concerning the wearing of the "Iskim". Then HH the Pope put the "Iskim" on HG Anbo Sarabamon, HG Anba Mettawos, and HG Anba Mina ava Mina. HH was wearing the "Iskim" too. Then he congratulated them, and the attending metropolitans and bishops congratulated them too. HH then carried on with the prayers. After that, HH gave his weekly sermon as usual. And the cathedral was very crowded from the number of attendees. This was the first time the "puting on of the Iskim" was celebrated in the time of HH Pope Shenouda III. ***************************************************************************** With the Head of the Supreme Court. HH the Pope received on Wed. Jan 31'st Mr. Awad el Morr, head of the Supreme Court. The meeting was attended by Mr. Samy Farag Youssef, deputy of the Supreme Court. ***************************************************************************** A new priest in the bichopry of Zagazig HG bishop Yacoupos of Zagazig and Minya el Kamh, promoted deacon Raouf Moheb Baki, son of the late Fr. Antonious Baki, to be the priest of Virgin Mary's and Mar Youhanna's church in Zagazig, under the name of Fr. Antonious, on Fri. Jan. 26'th 1996. The prayers were also conducted by HG Anba Angeilos, HG Anba Reweis, HG Anba Morcoss, and HG Anba Boutros. It was a happy day for everyone. Our congratulations to Fr.
