HH the Catholicos had come to Egypt on Tues. March 5'th, in return for HH Pope Shenouda III visit, and to visit the Coptic church, being a sister church of the Armenian Orthodox church, united by the beliefs, teachings, and values, as members in the Oriental Orthodox churches family. On Wed. March 6'th, he was received by HH the Pope, in the papal residence in Cairo, accompanied by three Armenian cardinals and two priests. The meeting was attended by HG Bishop Moussa, HG Bishop Serapion, and HG Bishop Youannes. The conversation was very friendly; the talk of beloved brothers, as members in the One Belief, and also as partners in work. This is due to the fact that HH the Catholicos is the moderator of the World Churches Council. He has also participated in the theological debate with the Byzantine Orthodox churchues. A chorus from the clerical college received HH with church hymns, as he arrived and also left the Papal Residence. In the evening of the same day (Wed.), HH attended the weekly meeting of HH Pope Shenouda, in the Cathedral, who requested a sermon from HH the Catholicos to the congregation. HH the Catholicos delivered the sermon in English, and HG bishop Serapion translated it into Arabic. HH the pope had introduced HH the Catholicos to the concgregation, to whom he (the Catholicos) talked to about the relation between God and man, and its effect on the environment. HH the Pope commented on that, and then delivered his lecture about the relationship between God and Man (The grandeur of God and His Modesty). On Friday, HH the Catholicos headed for Alexandria to visit HH Patriarch Partheinos in the Greek Orthodox patriarchate. Then he left for Wadi el Natroun, to visit HH the Pope in St. Bishoy's monastery. Then he returned to Cairo on the way back to Intilias. It is a historical visit, whose effect will be very effective in the Oriental Orthodox Churches unity. ******************************************************************************* With the deputy and secretary of the Congregational council HH the Pope received, in Alexandria: Dr. Tharwat Basily: deputy of the council, and Mr. Edward Ghaleb, secretary to the council. This was on St. March 2'nd 1996. ******************************************************************************* With the Clerical college of Tanta On Thurs. March 7'th, HH the Pope received in the his residence in St. Bishoy's monastery around ninety of the students from the branch of the clerical college in Tanta, to give them his lectures on Theology, until Sat. March 9'th. Accompanying them was Fr. Moussa Wassef the deputy of the college, and other clergy. These lectures are considered part from the curriculum of the clerical college. ******************************************************************************* With the workers of the bishopric of public services On Tues. March 5'th, HH the Pope met with the leaders of service in the bishopric of public services, with all its programs and branches, and studied with them the terms of their work in the bishopric, and received reports about their work. ************************************************************************************* Meetings with HH the Pope During the past two weeks, HH the Pope received: * Dr. Essam Isamel Fahmy, editor in chief of the Dostour newspaper (Mon. Feb 26'th) * Dr. Fawzy Estaphanos, head of department of anesthesia of Cleveland, USA, accompanied by his wife. * A group from the Mennonite foundation, Cairo branch. Among them was Mr. Ed Epp, Mr George Salib, and Jon & Rick Jonzem (Wed. Feb. 28'th) * In the morning of Thurs. Feb 29'th, he received some members from the board of St. Fatima School, Heliopolis, with a couple of Final year students, in a press interview. * In the evening of Mon. March 4'th, he received Dr. Nader Riad, CEO of Bavaria Inc. and the member of the congregational council. ************************************************************************************* In the Book Fair HH the Pope called for a debate in Cairo's Book Fair. At his reception was Dr. Samir Sarhan, chief administrator of the fair. This took place in the evening of Thurs. Feb 29'th, where HH gave a lecture on the mind, and its effect on the guidance of man, in several factors. Following the lecture, he answered a lot of questions, from the attendants who amounted to ten thousand. The answers were direct, and to the point. ************************************************************************************* HG Bishop Moussa meets with the youths of the 'Gezeerat Badran' district. In the evening of the first Friday in March, HG Bishop Moussa met with the youths of the 'Gezeerat Badran' district of Shoubra, in St. George's church. The topic of the sermon was "How Jesus Feeds us". The number of youths who attended was around 1500 of both genders, in a very fulfilling day for them. ************************************************************************************* With the churches of Cairo HH the Pope received, on Mon. March 4'th, the priests and council of St. Mary's church in Massarra, Shoubra. In the same day, he received the priests and council of St. Mary's church in Garden City. ************************************************************************************* HG Bishop Serapion arrived in Cairo on Tues. 5th March 1996. This is HH's first visit to the Mother Church in Egypt after his appointment as bishop for Los Angeles and South Carolina. HH Pope Shenouda III met with Anba Sarabion and they traveled to the monastery together Thursday night. ****************************************************************************** HG Bishop Filobous of Dakahlia appointed the ordained Mr. Rizkallah Abdel Saied as priest with the name of Father Youssef on Monday 19th Feb, 1996. Father Youssef will serve in the ancient Virgin Mary's church in El Raidaniya. Congratulations to Father Youssef, the congregation and HH Bishop Filobous. ******************************************************************************* On Monday 26th Feb, 1996 HH Pope Shenouda III appointed 9 new nuns to the Monastery of Abou Sefein. The newly-appointed nuns were nominated by Mother Iriny. HG Bishop Reweis, HG Bishop Youhanna and HG Bishop Youanes were also present. HH the Pope has appointed 88 nuns to the Monastery so far. Furthermore, on Monday 4th March,1996 he appointed 24 nuns to the Monastery of Mari Girguis in old Cairo. On Monday 11th March,1996 HH appointed a number of new nuns to the Monastery of Virgin Mary in Haret Zoweila. Moreover, HH appointed another number of nuns to the Monastery of Mari Girguis in Haret Zoweila. During all four events, the head nuns of the Monasteries were present. Congratulations to the Monasteries as well as the newly-appointed nuns. ****************************************************************************** Many of the Coptic churches celebrated the 21st anniversary of the departure of Father Michael Ibrahim on 25th March. ******************************************************************************* HH Pope Shenouda III met with HG Bishop Bakhomious of El Beheira, Mariout and Pentapolis on Saturday 24th Feb., 1996. The two discussed matters of service in the bishopric. HH the Pope also met with HG Bishop Beniamin of Minoufia and representative of HH in Alexandria. The two discussed some matters related to the service. ****************************************************************************** Father Roufaeel Farid arrived in Cairo Monday night, 21st Feb., 1996. Father Roufaeel serves the Coptic church in Zaire and Zambia. He is on a visit to the Mother church for a month. ****************************************************************************** On Tuesday 13th Feb. Father Danial Al Antouny arrived in Cairo on a similar visit to the Mother church. Father Danial serves the youth of Melbourne, Australia and serves the Coptic church in Berth. ******************************************************************************* Father Ibrahim Attia serving the Coptic church in Rally, North Carolina had a successful operation in his spinal cord. May God grant him speedy recovery. ****************************************************************************** Father Youhanna Iskandar the general priest in Los Angeles is receiving treatment from some bone disease. May God grant him speedy recovery. ******************************************************************************* The following priests serving Coptic church abroad arrived in Egypt lately: * Father Armanious El Baramosy from Holland arrived on Sunday 3rd March. He returned to his church on Friday 8th March. He has proposed to HH the Pope the idea of buying a big building which was previously being used as a school. * Father Flimon Mahrous the priest of Orange County, LA, arrived in Cairo with Bishop Serapion on 5th March to discuss certain matters of interest to the service in the bishopric of LA. * Father Arsanious El Anba Boula arrived in Cairo on Friday 8th March to finalize the preparations for his departure to Manchester, England. * Father Amonious, the son of the departed Father Semaan El Sheikh arrived in Cairo on Friday 1st march to participate in the memorial mass held for his father who had departed 40 days ago. ****************************************************************************** HH the Pope met with the LIONS group to give a lecture on Friday 1st March. The lecture was about Love and giving. HH answered questions addressed to him during the dinner party. The event was characterised by the spirit of national union and harmony. ****************************************************************************** HG Bishop Serapion visited Honolulu.
